Dumfries and Galloway has fifth slowest broadband speeds in the UK Dumfries and Galloway has one of the slowest broadband speeds in the UK. Independent experts thinkbroadband found the region to be the fifth slowest area in their speed test, which covers 118 locations. Andrew Ferguson, site editor of thinkbroadband, said: “With Dumfries and Galloway down in the bottom six slowest broadband areas in the UK, it is clear a lot of work is needed to catch up with other parts of the country and therefore allow local businesses to compete effectively in the global digital marketplace. “The key now is for the Scottish Government to ensure residents and businesses are given a clear indication of when improvements will arrive.” He added: “With signs that some parts of the area can get adequate speeds of 7 Meg, the areas that suffer slower speeds below 2.5 Meg should be given the priority for upgrades. In fact, 25 per cent of tests in our survey of the area were below 2.5Meg.” Dumfries and Galloway’s average download speed was measured at just 4.7 Mbps, compared to the UK average of 15.4Mbps and its average upload rate was just 0.4Mbps. Even worse off are Inverness (4.4Mbps), Hereford (3.9), Kirwall and Orkney (3.8) and Llandrindod Wells (2.4). The fastest broadband service is in Sutton, London, which reached speeds of 19.8Mbps. Dumfries and Galloway Council this year committed a £12.6m investment in superfast broadband through the the South of Scotland Broadband Plan. However, an important part of achieving fibre-optic broadband is the demand registration process and Dumfries and Galloway residents are slow to sign up. Dumfries and Galloway MP Russell Brown said: “The registration rate in Dumfries and Galloway is worryingly low. In Stranraer the registration rate is only 0.38 per cent, while Dumfries is only 0.1 per cent better.” To register follow the links from the website at southofscotland.org dgstandard.co.uk/
