EU shrimp imports fall 30%, in steepest drop since 1995 July 9, 2013, 5:03 pm Undercurrent News The European Union imported 30.5% less shrimp in 2012 than 2011, the sharpest drop since 1995, said the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP). The decline comes due to the deepening Euro-area recession and rising consumer prices, coupled with austerity measures in some countries that have affected the EU shrimp market. According to a Globefish report, the trend continued for the first part of the year. Imports were down 8.4% from last year for the first three months of this year. but the EU has considerably increased its imports from Asian countries, excluding Thailand and Vietnam. EU shrimp market was predicted to show no sign of improvement during the first half of 2013, as the region has been suffering impacts of economic recession and declining supplies from some main producing countries, like Thailand, due to shrimp disease. In 2012, Vietnam ranked seventh among main shrimp suppliers to the EU with total value of $220 million, down 41.9% on that of 2011.
