Ecologically sustainable hand carved wooden salad server sets. Pictured here farm raised rosewood and palm. $8 and up They make great gifts! Produced by a set of twin brothers in their 70s (who married a pair of sisters!) in a small village north of Chiang Mai Thailand. Fairly traded. The palm wood is from coconut palm trees that no longer produce fruit (while coconut palms can live over 150 years, they, on average, only produce coconuts for 50-70 years.). Interesting fact on palm trees - palm trees dont exist! What we think of a tree is actually a bush that is standing on really tall roots (that trunk isnt a trunk - its a mass if roots!). The rosewood is grown on mango (mango fruit tree) plantations because rosewood naturally gives off a natural chemical that repels beetles that like to eat mango trees! They are harvested every 25 or so years and allowed to dry covered but open to the elements for up to seven years before they are carved. These sets will last you a lifetime and more - as long as you care for them properly. -Dont put them in the dishwasher (no wood should go into a dishwasher. Its not the water, it is the high heat drying cycle that can warp them). -oil them a few times a year with olive oil or food safe mineral oil (the stuff you use on your cutting board). Allow the oil to soak in and then polish. -dont soak them in water for long periods of time and dont use citrus (orange or lemon) dish washing soap as these can dry out the wood. These and many other styles including ones with mother of pearl inlays, reclaimed olivewood and even ones made from water buffalo horn are available at Zanzibar Fair Trade Gallery in midtown Sacramento Www.zanzibartrading #saladserverset #saladserver #salad #palm #rosewood #fairtrade #ecology #thai #thailand #kitchen #spoon #fork #servers #buyfairtrade #shopfairtrade
