Every big industrail project, be it tar sands, coal mines, pipelines, whatever... they always say the right words about how safe they are. Then stuff like this happens. Again and again and again... A billion litres of coal waste-water from the Obed mine spilled into the Athabasca River Oct. 31 after a storage pond leaked Alberta Environment sent warnings for those downstream not to draw drinking water from the river, and cautioned farmers not to allow their livestock to drink from it. Jessica Potter of Alberta Environment said there has been some damage to fish habitat from the slurry spill. The water storage pond contained coal and silt as well as thickening chemicals called flocculants. A full assessment of the damage wont be available until the spring. So what does a corporation or the government do? Well, your waters toxic. Sorry about that. Here, have a lump of coal. For Christmas.
