Fiafia Upon arriving in Savaii, I finally got to spend time - TopicsExpress

Fiafia Upon arriving in Savaii, I finally got to spend time with Sarah. She had come to Samoa as well but while I was busy in Upolu with the wedding, she spent most of her time enjoying the tranquility of Savaii. And our night was graced by the fiafia. A dance and song performance traditionally performed in the village with usually a donation bowl in front of the dancers. While the ladies have a gracefully fluid, feminine dance sequence with a lot of hand gestures, the men display a very masculine approach to their movements. Its called slap dancing, where the palms are used to slap parts of their own body to create different sound/beats. A slap to the chest or a slap to the thigh followed by loud whooping is all part of the presentation. Some locals also call this the mosquito dance and you imagine why. Slap!
