Four years ago today my friend Jenny O. and I were both making sense of losses in each of our lives. She had lost her dad. I had lost a relationship and my second restaurant but even more than that. I lost myself. And so she said- Pack a bag for a long weekend. We are going on a road trip! And so the next morning we drove. And drove. And drove. She began to recited her lines for Into The Woods, while I searched Craigslist for an apartment in Hillcrest. We drove for 9 hours. And then, I left her in Temecula for the weekend and drove to Hillcrest napping along the way. Just before midnight I pulled up to Urban Outfitters and looked up at an apartment for rent. And I knew I was home. The next morning (now Sunday) at 7:30 am without even looking at the unit, I left the landlord a message saying Id transfer money to place a hold while I decided if a move was right for me. I then drove to Temecula and 20 minutes before arriving, Jenny calls to say PLEASE PICK ME UP! And I said, Im almost there! We then drove back to San Diego made the transfer and had brunch at MOs! By 1pm, we were drunk off mimosas. We hopped on the Betty MObile, Jimmy gave us a quick tour of Hillcrest and I said F#%k it! Drop me off, Im signing a lease! So I did! Jenny and I then drank ourselves silly at Gossip before meeting up with friends in Solano Beach. On Monday, with nothing else to do we threw caution to the wind and randomly decided to go to Bakersfield. We rented a hotel room for the night, picked a bar and placed an ad on craigslist asking everyone in the surrounding communities to come out and keep these homos company. To our surprise the staff at The Mint had heard about our ad, and welcomed us with drinks. They told us it was a straight bar but very LGBT friendly. Within an hour or two, the bar was packed with homos from all the neighboring communities in Californias most conservative county! They brought on extra help and kept thanking us with free drinks saying it was busier than the weekend! The next day we had breakfast with a local boy and drove until we ended up in Oakland, and then San Jose. We finally parted ways in San Francisco after six days of unplanned, unorganized and unexpected shenanigans! For the next two months, I sold everything I could think of and made the move! A few years later, when I put the final nail to the coffin and finally let go of my losses and began to move on, I called her saying I needed a friend. She said, Im in LA heading to SD to surprise you! And I said - OMG! Im in LA too! PICK ME UP! ASAP! The Universe works in mysterious ways!!!
