Friday Night Frights! Good Friday to you my midnight minions. And welcome to another episode of Friday Night Frights! In honor of the birthday of horror film legend Max Schreck (pictured up there at the top of your screen) I am pleased to present to you a newly restored version of the 1922 classic film Nosferatu! This movie was the one and only film produced by the Prana film company. It was the brain child of film producer Albin Grau who had been a soldier fighting in Serbia. There he was exposure to Eastern European vampire folklore. He wanted to make a movie based on them and so he, a bit too enthusiastic, commissioned the writing of a script based upon the novel Dracula despite not having yet obtained the legal rights to do so from the Stoker estate. In an attempt to avoid copyright violation lawsuits, the film was entitled “Nosferatu,” and other minor plot changes were made. But Stokers widow sued and won. Prana films went into bankruptcy, and all copies of its only production were destroyed with the exception of one which was stolen. Were it not for that one copy, Nosferatu would be a lost film today. So stretch out in your coffin, pour a cup of your favorite blood type and join me for the newly restored Nosferatu!
