George Frideric Handel (Halle, Germany 23 February 1685 – London, 14 April 1759) was born as Georg Friedich Händel in a family indifferent to music. However, he is regarded as one of the greatest composers of all time, even during his lifetime. Bach attempted, unsuccessfully, to meet with Handel while he was visiting Halle. Mozart is reputed to have said of him, "Handel understands affect better than any of us. When he chooses, he strikes like a thunder bolt." To Beethoven he was "the master of us all... the greatest composer that ever lived. I would uncover my head and kneel before his tomb". They are not alone: Handel is honoured with a feast day on 28 July in the liturgical calendar of the Episcopal Church (US), with Johann Sebastian Bach and Henry Purcell; in the Calendar of Saints of the Lutheran Church, with J.S. Bach and Heinrich Schütz; and in the calendar of saints prepared by The Order of Saint Luke for the use of The United Methodist Church, with J.S. Bach.
