Good morning, It has been a very wet night for parts of southern and eastern England with some places reporting well over an inch of rain. UK Forecast – 22nd May Synoptic situation: An area of low pressure is centred close to the northwest of France with a secondary centre moving northwards just off the coast of northeast England. An occluded front lies over north-western parts of Scotland and down across the west coast of Ireland, whilst another occluded front associated with the secondary low is lying northeast to southwest from Newcastle down to the Isles of Scilly. An unstable airmass covers much of England in its wake. Today’s outlook: The band of rain with some thunder and lightning that moved north/north-westwards out of France yesterday evening and overnight is now sitting across much of northern England, down into central and southern parts of Wales and towards Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly. Elsewhere it is a drier start to the day, although some showers continue to affect the north and west of Scotland and parts of Northern Ireland. That rain band will continue to edge further north and west this morning and becomes slow-moving across northwest England, the Isle of Man and north Wales whilst at the same time moving up into southern and especially eastern Scotland. The rain band will gradually weaken and become more showery by this afternoon. Meanwhile brighter conditions will develop across much of central, southern, south-western and south-eastern England along with the Isle of Wight and the Channel Islands, but any sunshine will help to set off further heavy downpours during this afternoon with a risk of hail and thunder, but there will still be some warm sunshine in-between the showers. Meanwhile across Northern Ireland and the rest of Scotland, including the Northern and Western Isles, it is a quieter outlook today with a lot of cloud to start with this morning and some showers in the north and west, but skies should brighten up with many places seeing a dry afternoon although the odd shower is possible. South-westerly winds will be rather gusty for a time along the Kent and East Anglian coastlines this morning before easing later, otherwise for much of the country light to moderate north/north-westerly winds are expected but backing more north-easterly later in the day and picking up a touch, especially towards the northeast of Scotland where strong to gale force winds are likely by this evening. Temperatures across England and Wales will generally be in the range of 15°C to 18°C, but in the best of the sunshine central and southern parts of England could hit highs of 20°C or 21°C. Across Scotland and Northern Ireland maximums of between 13°C and 15°C are expected, but across the Northern and Western Isles, highs will be nearer 9°C to 11°C. UV levels today will be low to moderate, as will pollen levels. Have a good Thursday. Paul
