“Growing” Through I have a friend who often tells me he’s going through something. I try to remind him that we’re always going through something. I believe life’s challenges, those difficult situations we go through, are really opportunities for reflection and growth. The process of going through is similar to a targeted gym workout – an exercise that is structured to strengthen our patience, pride, or faith muscles. A trainer once told me pushing through on those last few reps when you don’t think you can do any more makes all the difference in strengthening the targeted muscles. And sometimes the intensity of the “going through” workout is an attempt to grow and strengthen more than one muscle. It may be painful and difficult, but sometimes we don’t have the luxury or time to focus on one weakness at a time. If you’re anything like me, part of my frustration with going through is not knowing how I’m supposed to grow or the strength I need to acquire for the next step in the journey. Many times we find ourselves going through the same situations over and over again. Maybe the targeted muscle required more attention to develop correctly or the same exercise is being used as a multi-purpose growth mechanism. Because we bring unique personalities, perspectives, and prospects to the various situations we encounter, people may experience similar challenges that target different areas for growth and development. I have heard it said if you’re going through hell keep going. Most of the time, however, we do come out on the other side. The question may be whether we have just timidly gone through something waiting for our “this too shall pass moment” or have we grown through something by boldly and confidently seeking strength, wisdom, and insight – charging into the fray when the odds seem stacked against us. The answer to that question may not be revealed until the next going through moment, when we hear the voice of God through a loved one telling us to be still and watch God move, when we overlook God’s movement in the ordinary rhythm of everyday life, when we see the rainbow in the midst of the storm. This life is an amazing journey of going through – the peaks as well as the valleys, the calm as well as the storm, the successes as well as the struggles – each an opportunity for growth. Only we can choose whether we grow through it.
