Helen Twelvetrees...while playing Blance duBois in summer stock, a cast member was quoted as saying that Helen had the saddest eyes Ive ever seen. Most of her film roles used that quality to great effect and Helens character often suffered and fought for the wrong man to love her. She was a star in the Pre-Code era and worked through the late 1930s, although the films went from A quality to B as the decade progressed. She worked on the stage on Broadway and summer stock from the 1940s but retired in the early 50s with her third husband.. She divorced her first husband, Clark Twelvetrees accusing him of spousal abuse...and several years after, he was killed when an eyewitness to Twelvetrees hitting a woman, knocked him down and fracturing his skull. She had her only child, a son with her second marriage. She was suffering from a kidney ailment when she committed suicide by overdose at age 49.
