Here is one from the, “Now for something completely different.” archives. That being said, ‘completely different’ is our specialty. We received a commission from one of our wonderful clients to create a Gaudi-esque Christmas tree. We based our design for this Christmas tree on architectural details from Gaudi’s Palau Guell in Barcelona including the mosaics and one particular chimney. We built a digital model of the tree and played with different finishes and patterns. The final design for the tree was then presented to our client in the form of 3D rendered images. To create the actual Christmas tree we used profiles from our 3D digital model to CNC cut sections of styrofoam. These sections were then stacked, glued together and sanded to shape. For the mosaic tiling on our tree, we used pieces of glass from over 48 Christmas themed plates and platters that were glued to the styrofoam base. White grout was used to fill the spaces between the glass tiles. The spiraling ribbon of light was consist of a multitude of coloured glass channel. These covered strands of LED lights which, in turn, were covered by silver tinsel garland was also placed inside the channel to diffuse and deflect the light. Additional LED pin point lights were embedded amongst the mosaic glass tiles. The bottom section of the tree was built out of MDF and bendable plywood and covered with ceramic tile. The tree topper was inspired by a sun image found in many of Gaudi’s mosaics and was crafted by overlaying a clear glass ball with yellow glass pieces. Coloured pieces of glass were used for the sunrays. The glass Christmas tree is currently on display at The Rooms museum in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador.
