Heres your devotion for today for 1 Samuel 3: SCRIPTURE:: 1 Samuel 3:3-10 The Lord Calls Samuel 3 The boy Samuel ministered before the Lord under Eli. In those days the word of the Lord was rare; there were not many visions. 2 One night Eli, whose eyes were becoming so weak that he could barely see, was lying down in his usual place. 3 The lamp of God had not yet gone out, and Samuel was lying down in the house of the Lord, where the ark of God was. 4 Then the Lord called Samuel. Samuel answered, “Here I am.” 5 And he ran to Eli and said, “Here I am; you called me.” But Eli said, “I did not call; go back and lie down.” So he went and lay down. 6 Again the Lord called, “Samuel!” And Samuel got up and went to Eli and said, “Here I am; you called me.” “My son,” Eli said, “I did not call; go back and lie down.” 7 Now Samuel did not yet know the Lord: The word of the Lord had not yet been revealed to him. 8 A third time the Lord called, “Samuel!” And Samuel got up and went to Eli and said, “Here I am; you called me.” Then Eli realized that the Lord was calling the boy. 9 So Eli told Samuel, “Go and lie down, and if he calls you, say, ‘Speak,Lord, for your servant is listening.’” So Samuel went and lay down in his place. 10 The Lord came and stood there, calling as at the other times, “Samuel! Samuel!” Then Samuel said, “Speak, for your servant is listening.” OBSERVATION:: Samuel served in the Lords house as a boy, but did not yet know Him. he helped Eli, who by this time was elderly. 3 times the Lord called to Samuel, though Samuel thought it was Eli. after running in to ask what he needed, Eli realized what was going on so he instructed the boy to respond, Speak, LORD, for Your servant is listening. so, the boy heard the voice again and responded according to Elis direction. APPLICATION:: how many of you grew up in the church--or had instructions to help you discern the Lords voice? i almost feel its unfortunate because many who grew up around church turn away or treat things of the Lord as insignificant or mundane. we watched a video a while back that mentioned a staggering percentage of 18-20s who have left the church. of course, if youre receiving this email, you are not in that percentage...though you might have experienced low spots of less than enthusiastic service or even bouts of doubts... sometimes it takes tragedy to return to the Lord. thats really unfortunate. Samuels story started EARLY in his life, but at this point in his timeline, we see his first call from the Lord. what was yours? did it take a minute for it to sink in, that it was actually God calling you? did someone have to help you clue in? did they give you wise counsel, and did you heed it? and, what did the Lord say to you? was He standing there as He entered your presence? and, about how many times did He have to call before you came to recognize His voice? PRAYER:: Father, thank You for Your call! if we need to be reminded or feel Your presence anew, speak loudly, stand patiently, and thank You for being with us. what an honor to be in Your service, and to minister together; help us be responsive and give wise counsel to our brothers and sisters... amen.
