Hopewell Church is located near Hueston Woods in Preble County. Begun by antislavery enthusiasts moving from the south in the early 1800s, the brick church itself, built in 1826, is still in use during the summer months. But it is the graveyard begun in 1813 on the lot that is haunted. With a 1000 graves packed within, it isn’t surprising, most belonging to children dying during the 1840s epidemics twisting their way through Ohio. Tiny lights, a lantern, and balls of orange illumination are seen bobbing within the stone walls. But what is most interesting about this old graveyard is that when visitors return to their cars after strolling around the graves, there may be a surprise waiting in the car for them. What surprise, you might ask? No one knows except those who receive it, and none have revealed exactly what it is! It is said to be bad luck to trespass in the cemetery after dusk.
