I actually found a picture of Bert in the paper after the 1936 stove fire!! Its a much more in depth article than the first one I had found. I love all the detail about why Bert was home and that he told Edith to stay in bed while he made breakfast!! Its even better that he posed for a pic of him inspecting the damage. This guy was such a character!!! ;-) --- Three Lives Imperiled by Stove Blast Bert W. Field Struck in Chest by Fragment of Flying Metal Wife, Baby Grazed Firemen Quickly Beat Out Flames Started by Scattered Coals KITCHEN WRECKED. Four persons narrowly escaped being injured about 8 oclock Wednesday morning when a coal and wood stove in the kitchen of the home of Mr. and Mrs. Bert W. Field, 818 Madison Street, exploded, scattering metal and hot coals through two rooms. Mr. Field, who was preparing breakfast for his wife and their 17-month old son, Joseph D. Field, was struck In the chest by a part of the stove and thrown through a doorway into the dining room. He was dazed by the force of the blast and was burned on one arm. A chunk of metal about two feet in width tore through the kitchen wall and hurtled across the dining room just as Mrs. Field and the baby were about to enter the room from the front of the house. A blaze quickly started on the floor of the kitchen immediately after the detonation. Mrs. Field telephoned firemen and then helped her husband to a chair and applied first aid treatment for burns and shock. Firemen quickly extinguished the kitchen flre and ascertained there were no gas leaks. The explosion was caused by a frozen water pipe and water jacket attached to the stove, they said. Mr. Field, the proprietor of a trucking company, had remained home from work Wednesday because of the impossible conditions of the rural roads, and had told his wife to stay in bed while he cooked the familys morning meal.
