I am moving my earthquake comments from a friends post to mine. LOMA PRIETA 1989 Don, I was at Fishermans Wharf when the earthquake struck. A veteran of many earthquakes in Taiwan and Okinawa, I initially laughed it off. The seriousness of the situation struck home when people starting running out of their residences; some in bathrobes. Joan, Vicky and I walked back to the car to return to Campbell. Along the way you could smell the liquor from all the broken bottles. I had just taken number 35 of a 36 shot roll. So the only shot I got was of the fire plume coming from the Marina. As we made our way out of San Francisco, we began to notice some of the damage. What normally was a hour drive turned out to be almost 3 hours. Everyone taking care to check the roads. Got back to Campbell and found a pizza place that was the only restaurant open. Most places were dark so we were lucky. On my way to the restroom , I picked up the pay phone and got a dial tone. Called the East Coast to let everyone know we were okay. In a twist of fate, the bookstore in Santa Cruz we had been in the day before was seriously damaged. Got our regularly scheduled flight out the next morning 3 hours ago · Like · 1
