I filed the following comments regarding net neutrality with the FCC at . Its a little rambling, but I dont have time to clean it up right now. I try not to involve myself in politics because I often find both sides distasteful, but the philosophers had it right: The price good men pay for indifference to public affairs is to be ruled by lesser men. Please support net neutrality. Allowing cable and wireless companies, which were built as government-enforced monopolies or oligopolies in their respective areas, to control the internet violates the very fundamental idea of the internet itself. The cable industrys arguments were best summed up by George Orwell in 1945: All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others. Cable and wireless companies would become the gatekeepers to all information, charging additional money to web sites, mobile apps, social media companies, local governments, and everyone else while simultaneously charging the receiver of the data for the same bits. Even AT&T in their heyday didnt try that. The US has lost most of its manufacturing industry and now relies on information services to maintain the value of our dollar and standard of living. Increasing the barrier to entry for internet startups will cause irreparable harm to the economy. If you want to be a truly useful FCC, instead of just an industry tool, you should also make it illegal for states to outlaw local governments from running their own fiber networks, just like you prevented governments and homeowners associations from banning small satellite dishes in 1996. The job of the FCC is to make and enforce standards that encourage information exchange, not to enact rules that favor one private entity over another.
