I have read comments saying that the move by Pink Dot SG to bring in security personnel for crowd control is an escalation. With ill-sentiments and rhetoric at an all-time high, and considering the fact that there were 21000 people last year, bringing in crowd control is an appropriate suggestion. This is even the case for many large-scale rallies and protests overseas - organisers will provision for security personnel just in case things get out of hand. I even just read a post from Miak whose friend overheard a group of teenagers wanting to come and mess around at the event. Doubtless its just teenage foolishness and bravado at play, and I sincerely hope that nothing comes out of it. However, it is worrying nonetheless. Every time, it seems the reactions and movements of the LGBT community are framed as escalations. The religious leaders who have deemed fit to fan the flames and issue edicts that bring about moral panic about the growing threat to society and family are never considered as such. This hypocrisy tires me to such an extent that I dont even want to waste words rebutting their tired culture war rhetoric of decades past. The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends towards justice. I am not interested with debating about whether many of my close friends should even exist. They do not lead lifestyles. They do not have tendencies. They are not unnatural. They are not sinners. More importantly, I admire how the community has responded in times like this - with grace, tact, and most importantly, love. If there are people tomorrow who will disrupt the proceedings of the event, we must not sink to their level. Let them, who demonise the LGBT community and their straight allies, show to Singapore who are the actual demons.
