I keep seeing the headline: 40 Australian-Muslim leaders condemn the actions of those responsible for the hostage situation in Martin Place today. No shit they condemn the actions, its entirely against their religion and the media should know that. But Islamophobia has been constructed so strongly and ingrained for such a long time that the mainstream media actually feels the need to remind us that extremists dont represent the whole community. If this hostage taker was Catholic or Christian, or a member of any other less-vilified religion; I doubt any religious leaders would even be interviewed. I also doubt their religion would even be mentioned. Dont for a second think Im discrediting the severity of the situation today. Dont think Im denying the apparent danger now present thanks to the events that are currently transpiring in our own country. All Im saying is that its important to remain level-headed, view this scenario from a rational and objective perspective and determine what needs to change socially and politically from this point forward. Do this for yourself, dont rely on the mainstream media for facts. My heart and hope goes out to all those involved today. We as a human race are better than this, its time to stop jumping to conclusions based on fear and time to start fostering change, hope and peace.
