I, too, have been asked what keeps me from murdering someone since I dont believe in God. There are several answers to that. For example: 1) Why doesnt belief in God prevent believers from murdering someone? 2) I have no desire to go around murdering people. 3) There are laws against murder and even if I murdered someone I would likely lose my freedom, perhaps my life which is the only one I have. 4) Believers in God, especially Christians, have an out which we atheists dont. If a Christian murders someone all he or she has to do is to repent, beg God for forgiveness and all is well. Heaven awaits. As for the Golden Rule, like many people before and after the advent of Christianity, I prefer the so-called Negative Golden Rule which states: Do not do unto others what you dont want others to do to you. Theres a subtle but important difference between that and the more familiar version. If someome wishes to believe, thats fine with me if they chose their religion for themselves; if they do not use it to harm others or to deny others their freedom of or from religion and their equal rights. As I have often pointed out, many Chrisians thump their bible instead of reading it or ignore what it says---especially the preachers and proselytizers. One verse that is consisently ignored is: Romans 12:18 (KJV) If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men. If more lived by that verse the world would be a better place and we atheists would criticize Christians less.
