Iloilo International Airport cited as key project to ASEAN link by: Reymar Latoza The World Bank’s Singapore Infrastructure Hub has identified the Iloilo International Airport as among the key projects that would link the Philippines to other ASEAN countries. The P30.4-billion modernization of the international airport in Cabatuan, Iloilo is one of the 15 projects under the government’s public private partnership (PPP) program. These PPP projects worth P495.85 billion are vital connectivity projects that will pave the way for the exchange of more goods and services, the World Bank said. In a previous report by Iloilo Metropolitan Times, the Public-Private Partnership Center (PPPC) said the modernization of the Iloilo International Airport aims to decongest the airport which currently operates over the required capacity At present, the airport is handling direct flights to Hong Kong and Singapore, aside from domestic routes. It was designed to cater 1.6 million passengers and 11,500 tons of cargoes per year and can accommodate aircrafts as big as an Airbus 330 with a seating capacity of 276. The airport is also considered as the 4th busiest airport in the country in terms of passenger traffic and the 5th busiest in terms of total cargo handled. According to the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP), the airport catered to 1.85 million passengers in 2012. The PPPC said the expansion project will be implemented by the Department of Transportation and Communications and the CAAP. Other airport projects include the operation, maintenance and redevelopment of the Bacolod Airport worth P40.57 billion; Davao, P40.57 billion; Puerto Princesa, 5.81 billion; New Bohol, P2.34 billion; and Laguindingan, P14.62 billion. In a report by ABS-CBNNews, the PPP program of the Philippines has been hailed as the most mature PPP program in the region during the first ASEAN PPP Networking Forum held in December. “In the ASEAN region, the Philippines was ranked highest in PPP readiness due to its advanced legal and administrative structure based on the Infrascope 2011 Study of the Economist Intelligence Unit commissioned by the Asian Development Bank (ADB),” the report said.
