In 1965, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. (David Oyelowo) and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference set their sights on Selma, Alabama, hoping non-violent protests there will help secure unhindered voting rights for millions of illegally disenfranchised African-Americans. Directed brilliantly by Ava DuVernay and featuring superb performances by Oyelowo and Carmen Ojogo as Coretta Scott King, Selma captures the essence of those brutal, hopeful times. It doesnt shy away from the bloody violence carried out against black citizens, nor from the flaws of an all-too-human Dr. King; more importantly, it shows King overcoming his weariness and doubts stemming from the long struggle, and taking his place as a principal leader in the burgeoning protest movement in Selma. Most recommended.
