Its Thursday! Please enjoy another excerpt from There You Feel Free: Excerpt from Sights and Sounds of Madness by Paul __________ “Nullum magnum ingenium sine mixtura dementiae fuit” that’s Latin for “There is no great genius without some touch of madness.” Seneca the Younger wrote that in the First Century AD. The thought, you should know, is often attributed to Aristotle, who had said and thought something similar in the past. And before him, Plato said something similar too. Some artists claim that their work is the property of some greater force, maybe God or gods. They see themselves as merely a conduit, channel or tool through which genius occurs. Thomas Edison said that genius was all about effort (“…one percent inspiration… ninety-nine percent perspiration”). Michaelangelo likened genius to “eternal patience.” Lao Tzu said that it was being able to see the potential in things; to see more than they appear. (“To see things in the seed, that is genius.”) Though, genius could merely be “the abundance of life and health,” if Thoreau was correct.
