Its Wetlands Wednesday! Ubiquitous to freshwater and brackish - TopicsExpress

Its Wetlands Wednesday! Ubiquitous to freshwater and brackish environments, the American Alligator (Alligator mississippiensis) is found at Lakeland’s Wetland Treatment System as well. Both this time of year and the springtime, with cooler water temperatures but warmer ambient temperatures, the alligators are highly visible as they’re out sunning themselves around the Wetland lakes. Alligators are ectothermic, meaning they are cold blooded and their bodies are unable to create heat. Therefore, when the temperature drops this time of year, alligators are out basking in the sun to stay warm. Wetland staff are always mindful of the danger these animals present and are always cautious around them. We also know that the Wetland is their home, not ours. We just observe and try not to disturb them.
