Ive become really interested in this idea of gardening by when things in nature happen. IE when birds get back, when you see the first dandelion, etc, etc. I did read this in an article about three sisters, because its what the Indians did (planting corn based on when the buds of a certain plant reached a size etc) but also because I had a lot of volunteers come up much sooner this year, but its also been an abnormal year. Though, they say the early season when things dont grow quickly cause insect infestation and fungus. So while there is a benefit to planting early theres also a benefit to waiting until some of the predator insects wake up to control the insects that rush in the spring to beat the predators. I think it would be easy to record the necessary data because there is a rocky outcropping of healthy native prairie near my house (I dont know, and hope it doesnt, legally count as native prairie because the ecosystem is allegedly 99% destroyed and I hope to buy it from the railroad some day) so there is a pretty fair amount of wildflowers to judge things based on. (Also, as a side note, I have a theory that if I were to build a stone or cement wall along the lower part of it and plant some pasture stuff that thrives in marginal soils, buckwheat etc, and water it a bit that it could ultimately turn into much more fertile soil with better water retention that could make great pasture.)
