Joan McAlpine, a Nationalist MSP, claims the change is intolerant towards Scots who do not have a British identity but Unionists accuse her of refusing to accept the referendum result. The Scottish Nationalists have been accused of ignoring the independence referendum result after a senior SNP MSP described as “insensitive” plans to put the Union flag on new UK driving licences. Joan McAlpine, a former parliamentary aide to Alex Salmond, said the UK Government was being “petty” and “intolerant” towards those drivers who do not share a sense of British identity. The South Scotland MSP argued that the move, announced over the festive period, contradicted David Cameron’s claim that the UK is a “family of nations” and his promise of a “respect agenda” in the wake of September’s referendum. But Unionist politicians accused her of indulging in “petty squabbles” and called on her to recognise that a clear majority of Scots voted to remain part of Great Britain. Claire Perry, the UK Transport Minister, announced last week that the Union flag would be included on all new licences issued in addition to the EU flag, which is already included.
