KWANKWASO LAYS FOUNDATION OF N2 BILLION MEDICAL FACILITY DONATED BY DANGOTE FOUNDATION TO MURTALA MUHAMMAD SPECIALIST HOSPITAL Governor Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso of Kano state has laid the foundation of a 5-storey ultra-modern theatre complex worth N2 billion, at Murtala Muhammad Specialist hospital in Kano city, donated by Dangote foundation. The complex, named Mariya Sanusi Dantata the theatre complex is dedicated to the mother of Alh. Aliko Dangote, the chairman of Dangote Foundation. The facility will include 10 operating theatres, three intensive care units, patients’ wards and administrative/service rooms for medical personnel. Governor Kwankwaso explained that the threatre complex will complement the giant efforts of his administration in improving the health sector, explaining that government is now working hand in hand with Alhaji Aliko Dangote in several areas of human development. “With this intervention the over bloated threatre list will be drastically reduced while the long wait for surgical operations will be minimized,” governor Kwankwaso said. He recalled that the hospital, built in 1912, is the biggest in sub-Saharan Africa, serving many states in Northern Nigeria and some West African countries, especially Niger republic. The governor therefore thanked Dangote Foundation for its support which he maintained, will consolidate the efforts of his administration in transforming the health sector of Kano state. In his remarks, Alh. Aliko Dangote said,”Dangote Foundation’s gesture in donating and equipping this building, is not just about creating a modern, solely needed medical facility in this great city of ours. It is about our broader commitment to systematically improving the health and well being of the citizens”. He promised that besides equipping the theatre, the foundation will shoulder the running cost of the complex on terms to be agreed with the state government and also proved world-class medical personnel to manage it. Alh. Dangote also promised to donate a state-of-the-art Diagnostic Center and Laboratory at the hospital, to provide comprehensive medical response of international standard to patients. In his remark, Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Malam Sanusi Lamido Sanusi lamented that Nigerians annually spend billions of Naira on medications abroad, due to the decay of medical infrastructures in the country, expressing optimism that with interventions such as that of Dangote, the phenomena will be history.
