LAS BOLINAS (Panama) - 28 June 1997 - Photographed as she was entering the Welland Canal from Lake Ontario at Port Weller, Ontario, Canada.. Original Ektachrome slides by Jeff Cameron.. IMO 7803803 - Construction of this ship began early in 1978 at the VEB Mathias-Thesen Werft drydock at Wismar Germany and on 17 June 1978 she was launched as the yards hull #114.. Several months later on 30 September she entered service as FONTENOY for Societe Courtage & Transport of Dunkerque, France.. The Wismar class, of which FONTENOY was a member, was designed specifically for trading into the Great Lakes and as a result her dimensions were determined by the size of the locks of the St. Lawrence Seaway and the Welland Canal. As built she measured 176.51 meters in length, 22.86 meters in width, 14.0 meters in depth, 15,997 gross tonnes and a deadweight of 22,731 tonnes. Her 8-cylinder MAN diesel engine could produce an impressive 11,200 horsepower and speeds of up to 15.25 knots (approximately 28.25 km/h) FONTENOY was designed to carry bulk and general cargo as well as containers both in her 5 cargo holds and atop her hatch covers. 4 cargo handling cranes of 25 tonne capacity were fitted atop her bulkheads.. By 1979 after less than a year of operation under the French flag, she was sold to Federal Pacific (Liberia) Ltd. and renamed FEDERAL HURON. Under this name she was to visit the Great Lakes many times.. In 1980 she was lengthened to 199.8 meters with the addition of a 6th cargo hold between her #3 and #4 cranes. This increased her tonnages to 18,818 grt, 28,676 dwt and her container capacity to 828 TEU By 1982 she was owned by Belcan N.V. (N.V. UBEM S.A) of Antwerpen, Begium.. She went on to sail as FEDERAL HURON until 1989, HURON until 1991, ALEXANDERS UNITY until 1992, LAS BOLINAS until 2000 and finally STAVROS until she was retired in 2002. On 16 February 2002 she arrived off Alang, India where, sometime later, she was beached for demolition..
