LEGONG DANCE Legong dance is one of the traditional dance that was originally developed in Peliatan village, Ubud. The first time this dance aims to entertain the king and his family. the beginning story of LEGONG is recorded in the Babad Dalem Sukawati which was written around the 19th century there it is written that the region of Sukawati is known as the region of art. according to Babad Dalem Sukawati , I Dewa Agung Karna do a austerities, and then he received a revelations, and some shadow of beautiful angels was dancing in the sky...! after that he asked the artists in this region to create a work of art in the form of dance. and the artists make nine masks as the embodiment of the angel, and this dance by some young girl, known by the name of sanghyang Legong dance, and in another display during the ceremony at the Yogan Agung temple. of the Sanghyang Legong dance here I Gusti Ngurah Jelantik inspired to create a dance that is similar but not wearing a mask and pull by men only. The dance was called Nandir, Nandir dance is the beginning of the creation of Legong dance. king sukawati impressed with this nadir dance, then he asked the artist in sukawati to make similar dance for young girls in his palace. This dance movement is very complex rhythm with accompanying percussion. leg means flexible or lithe or graceful movement. and gong means gambelan/percussion. .. so Legong means the beautiful movement and very dependent and influenced by gambelan/percussion. that go with it..! this dance performed by two dancers or just one dancer alone ... usually begins with the character condong if the dancer is only one ...
