Last night Labor forced the Abbott Government into another embarrassing defeat for their unfair and cruel budget. The Abbott Government attempted to introduce measures that would have removed job seekers’ basic rights of appeals, make it easier for employers to discriminate based on age and put vulnerable people who just want to work at risk. I’m not sure how they plan to fulfil their promises to create one million new jobs when all they seem to be doing is cutting, slashing and attacking people already doing it tough. Labor Senators successfully moved a raft of amendments to the Government’s Strengthening the Job Seeker Compliance Framework Bill that will protect Australians from harsh penalties when searching for a job. We fought to maintain respect and support for Australian job seekers in the Senate and won.
