Lectures and Exhibition -The First World War Falls Library, Mon 4th – Fri 8th Aug Soldiers from Belfast served on every major First World War battlefront, in the armies of many nations, and died in Flanders, France, Gallipoli, Germany, Greece, Italy, Mesopotamia, Russia and Palestine. By the end of the First World War in November 1918 the political landscape of Ireland had been radically changed. How should we remember and commemorate those who died who represented both the unionist and nationalist tradition? What was the impact of the war on women and those at home? Féile an Phobal is hosting a series of talks including presentations by PRONI (Public Records Office Northern Ireland) to reflect on how we should understand the momentous events of 1914-1918. Members of the public are invited to contribute the story of their own family’s military history. Chaired by Claire Hackett, project manager Dúchas oral history project & ‘Pieces of the Past’ involving nationalist and unionist working-class communities work on ‘history and memory’. Mon 4th Aug, 1pm – Launch of exhibition on 6th Connaught Rangers ‘Rediscovering the Belfast Nationalists who fought in WWI’ - Siobhan Brennan Deane. A thousand men, encouraged by West Belfast MP Joe Devlin, signed up within months of the declaration of war. What were their experiences in the trenches, their experiences upon demobilisation? Siobhan Brennan Deane, 6th Connaught Rangers Research Project & Genealogy Researcher (Belfast). Mon 4th Aug, 7pm – ‘Remembering, Forgetting and Commemorating Irelands Great War: Issues for Belfast’ – Prof Richard S Grayson. On the day that the Great Wars Centenary begins, this talk will examine how the war has been remembered, forgotten and commemorated in Belfast, reflecting on how this relates to wider issues in Irish (and British) commemoration of the war). Professor Richard S Grayson (Goldsmiths, University of London) is the author of Belfast Boys: How Unionists and Nationalists Fought and Died Together in the First World War, a military historian, editor, & chairs the Academic Advisory Group for the Digital Projects (Imperial War Museum). Tues 5th Aug, 1pm – ‘The Soul of the Nation: Irish Republicans, War and Rebellion’ – Fearghal McGarry on how that wider conflict shaped the 1916 Easter Rising. Fearghal McGarry is Reader in Irish History at Queen’s University Belfast and has written books about the Spanish Civil War, Frank Ryan, Eoin O’Duffy, & Irish republicanism, including Rebel: Voices from the Easter Rising. Wed 6th August 1pm – ‘The Great War and Unionist Memory’ – Philip Orr. The importance of military history in unionist identity, its significance now and in the future. Philip Orr is a writer, teacher, community worker & author of The Road to the Somme and Field of Bones. Thurs 7th Aug 1pm – ‘Belfast Women and the Great War - Dr Margaret Ward & Lynda Walker. A visual account of the impact of war in Belfast, looking at how women mobilised to support the war effort; the impact of war on work and social life and also on womens political organisations. Dr Margaret Ward is a feminist historian. Her books include Unmanageable Revolutionaries: Women and Irish Nationalism and biographies of Maud Gonne and Hanna Sheehy Skeffington. Lynda Walker, a trades union & feminist activist, helped open the first women’s centre in Belfast in 1979 and is a member of the boards of Women’s TEC and Shankill Women’s Centre. Fri 8th August 1pm – ‘The Formation and History of the Three Irish Divisions’ - Jimmy McDermott. Historian Jimmy McDermott is author of Northern Divisions- The Old IRA and the Belfast Pogroms 1920-1922, and has written extensively and lectured on twentieth century Ireland.
