Little Jimmy Dickens has died. He grew up in Bolt in Raleigh County and attended Trap Hill High School. He started his career singing on Sundays on WJLS. In a 2007 interview with West Virginia Public Broadcasting, Dickens recalled, I had a little old $12 guitar and Id carry it in a pillowcase and Id hitchhike from Bolt to Beckley to WJLS and Id go over there and get with some groups that were playing there and worm my way in and theyd let me sing one song maybe a week on the radio. In this photo, Dickens returned to WJLS in 1990 for the ceremony marking the format switch in which the country music format was moved from AM to FM and religious programming was moved to WJLS(AM). He is pictured with station owner Nancy Smith.
