Love art? Want to learn more about it? Scottsdale’s Museum of Contemporary Art (SMoCA) is recruiting volunteer docents. Docents guide visitors through the exhibits during tours lasting anywhere from 10 to 40 minutes, according to Carolyn Robbins, SMoCA’s curator of education. It takes time to gain the knowledge required to lead tours. “The training process consists of a 28-week course,” she says. “Prospective volunteers meet every Tuesday for two hours.” The process includes lecture-based study, gallery walks and a textbook. The first class starts on Tuesday, Sept. 24 and lasts through April. After seven months of training and a summer off, docents become apprentices who will assist in guided tours in Fall 2014. SMoCA currently has 70 volunteer docents. An introductory coffee meeting will be held at 10:30am Thursday, Sept. 12, in the SMoCA lounge.
