The LGU has begun strict implementation of Article X, Section 2 of Ordinance No. 1748-2002, to ensure the safety of thousands of pedestrians passing through the central business district of the city. Mayor Belen T. Fernandez has called on every Dagupeño to lead by example and follow traffic regulations. “What we want to do is remind the public to cross the road at the designated areas to avoid accidents,” said Fernandez. Traffic enforcers from the Public Order and Safety Office (POSO) have also started using handheld stop and go signs to properly guide pedestrians and motorists. Pedestrians who will be caught crossing on prohibited areas along major thoroughfares will be stopped by traffic enforcers and will be issued corresponding fines for violating the anti-jaywalking law. Violators will be fined P50 for the first offense, P300 for the second offense, and P500 for the third offense. Carlito Ocampo, City Action Service Team (CAST) Chief, asked for the publics cooperation in the implementation of the traffic regulation by using pedestrian lanes and overpasses. In line with the campaign, Ocampo also appealed to motorists not to stop their vehicles on pedestrian lanes. “The main point of this is safety. We want pedestrians and motorists to be disciplined and safe,” said Ocampo. Residents as well as balikbayans have hailed the improved traffic situation in downtown Dagupan that succeeded in eliminating traffic bottleneck. #
