MONDAY MYTH: If you have a baby or young child, its best to let - TopicsExpress

MONDAY MYTH: If you have a baby or young child, its best to let them pull on the dogs ears, tail, etc. so that the dog gets used to it. This is a very dangerous assumption that some parents make; assuming that if the dog doesnt react badly the first time she has her tail pulled etc. then it doesnt bother her, and is therefore ok for a child do continue doing so in the future. Our dogs tolerate a lot from us, but like humans, they can only tolerate so much before we push them over the edge. This is often why dogs end up biting their family members, usually small children! They give lots of subtle warning signs that they are uncomfortable with a situation, such as having a child climb all over them, but parents dont know what these signs are, (yawning, lip licking, turning their head away, wagging just the tip of the tail...) and therefore dont see them. If we dont recognize these warning signs, we wont know when to remove our child from the situation, and then it can get to the point where the dog feels she needs to make herself more clear. By teaching small children how to interact safely with their dogs, and by teaching parents what warning signs to look out for, we can prevent many dog bites from happening! Keep and eye out on this page, as Ill be sharing some great resources for just that throughout the upcoming week. Happy Monday! :) -Vic
