MOTHER WHO ABANDONED BABY IN DRAIN IS REFUSED BAIL The Magistrate has refused to grant bail this morning to the 30-year-old mother charged with leaving her newborn baby in a Quakers Hill drain to die. The mother has been remanded in custody and will face Penrith Local Court on Friday. Police papers allege that she admitted to police that she left the child intending for it to die. She is charged with intent to murder which carries a maximum penalty of 25 years imprisonment. The charge also attracts what is known as a standard non parole period of 10 years. This means that the judge will be required to use 10 years in prison as a reference point when deciding how long the mother will actually spend in prison if she is convicted.
