Mar.27,2014 Part XXVI The Hunters ROTC Guerillas story, as recounted by B/Gen. Eleuterio (Col. Terry Magtanggol) L. Adevoso in his autobiography-book A Personal Story-50 Years, with comments by Jerry F. Adevoso * in his book, Terry Adevoso also described their food intake (which had always been a problem and major endeavor of all guerillas to overcome during Liberation), with observations and experiences that most Filipinos can certainly relate to.... During the Liberation campaign, the boys at first welcomed corned beef hash, chili con carne, cheeses, Type C rations, and even Type B rations. Later, they developed stomach aches and a revulsion for cold food, and some kind of cooking had to be done - like boiled potatoes, cabbage, peas and carrots, and even fresh foods from the US quartermaster as it was no longer proper to forage from the countryside. Later, the canned goods became so repugnant that sometimes the boys threw them into Japanese foxholes to lure them into coming out to surrender. In the long run, the Hunters unit quartermaster developed a system of exchanging some of the US food with fresh Filipino food ingredients from the people so that we could give more acceptable food to or men. The civilians appreciated our US foodstuff, and our men appreciated the fresh civilian (*Filipino) food. Later, all meals issued to the fighting men were a combination of US and Filipino foods whenever possible. Many of them, upon discharge, were to steer clear away from such things as corned beef, corned beef hash, chili con carne and pork and beans, having been overfed with them during the campaign for Liberation.
