Minnie Baragwanath, Chief Executive of Be.Accessible (NZ), presented on Day One of Australia’s Disability Employment Conference 2013 in Adelaide. Minnie emphasised the collective power of people with disability to challenge the low expectations they sometimes encounter, and to achieve broad goals such as social inclusion and full employment. She came to these points by speaking initially from personal experience. After being diagnosed with vision impairment, she noticed that people seemed to lower their expectations of what it was possible for her to achieve – someone suggested she might find work as a telephone operator. “It wasn’t my expectations that had changed,” she said, “it was the world’s. I still had the same dreams, but people wanted to box me into this little place.”
