More on the Idaho Mom: She was an intelligent research scientist with a conceal carry permit. She had been an experienced gun carrier and recently received her conceal carry purse from her husband. This story is a sober reminder that no matter how smart you are or how experienced you are with a firearm (or anything else), if you have a small temporary lapse in judgement, something very bad can happen. In a similar fashion, if you change lanes on a freeway without checking your blind spot, you could cause a serious collision. A lot of people are putting a lot of emphasis on her decision to carry her firearm in her purse. I dont specifically endorse purse carry but I am not opposed to it if one is aware of the issues that go along with it and act accordingly. It is not too different when a conceal carry person chides an open carry person about his personal decision about not hiding his gun. If you are going to carry a gun in your purse, you need to be sure - at a minimum - that you do not allow or make it possible for an unauthorized person to gain access to your purse - whatever it takes. Carrying a firearm requires a serious commitment to be responsible and to follow all fundamental safety rules each and every single time that you handle a firearm. There is no need to wring our hands and wonder if we need to do something as a consequence. Sometimes, we err as humans and pay a horrific price for doing so. That is part of the experience of this existence we call life. There is risk is in almost everything we do. The best we can do is assess our activities and make a concerted effort to be dilligent with the responsibility that has been entrusted to us.
