Must read Gene Seymour on his uncle, Chuck Stone, the famous Philadelphia Daily News columnist, and a founder of NABJ, who died at 89. Chuck was a great man who lived and wrote, as Gene notes, with purpose. I had the privilege of knowing Chuck when I worked with Gene and a group of amazing journalists at the Philly Daily News under Gil Spencer back in the day. And, yes, it is true that wanted criminals would walk into the newsroom, looking to turn themselves into Chuck rather than the Philadelphia Police, known at the time for brutally beating suspects. And yes, it was Chuck who negotiated the release of prison guards during the Graterford prison riot. May he rest in peace.
