NOAA made this image of the Arctic sea ice 2014 minimum using the DMSP satellites, and posted it on the Nation Snow and Ice Data Center Facebook page. At http;//nsdic.org you can find historical data on ice in the Antarctic, Arctic, and Greenland. Ice extent has actually grown recently in the Antarctic, but overall temperature, ice thickness and melting trends suggest there could be a failure of the ice shelves in the future. It is at least a couple of degrees warmer at the South Pole, but the higher winds that have resulted may be creating more ice on the perimeter of Antarctica right now.
