Obamacare: A closer look. We have a real problem with financing health care in the US. We spend far more than any other country per person and yet statistically have only mediocre results as compared with other first world countries. A significant part of our health care expenditure goes to health insurance and large drug companies, to overhead, voluminous paperwork at all levels, profits, and other overhead expense. Obamacare does not fix these very serious problems that make health care in the US far more expensive than any place in the world. Obamacare is a bad idea. The answer is a single payer or medicaid/medicare for all as used by every major country except America. Medicaid provides free health care with minimal paperwork and overhead. Taxes would go up but far less than we currently pay into the present system. Representative Conyers, together with a number of others have introduced H.R 676, the “Expanded and Improved Medicare for All act.” If enacted this would create a single payer publicly funded, privately delivered plan that would save us 5 Trillion dollars over the next ten years. This would be a step in the right direction. The best solution, however, is free medical care for all supported by the tax system rather than by insurance premiums, co-payments, deductibles, and other expensive record keeping and red tape.
