Lance Sergeant David Gartland, aged 40 of the Grenadier Guards and Private James Fairburn Austin, aged 24 of 400 Troop Royal Logistics Corps, died of multiple injuries after there were involved in the collision. Colin Pattison, aged 52 from Goole, North Humberside, pleaded not guilty to causing death by dangerous driving. He was sentenced to 18 months at Carlisle Crown Court today and received a six year driving ban. The collision occurred following mechanical failure of a HGV lorry, driven by a man, aged 47 from Carlisle, which caused it to break down on the A66 and release a cloud of black smoke. A Landrover driven by James Fairburn Austin collided with the rear of the HGV. This was followed by the HGV, driven by Pattison, colliding with the Landrover and HGV PC Richard Bowman, said: “The sentencing today reflects the tragedy of the death of Private Fairburn and Lance Sergeant Gartland. “It is vital for drivers to be cautious when on any road, but even more so when on a duel carriageway. An obstruction can be dangerous on any road, but when travelling at higher speeds, it can be fatal. #4
