One of the lesser known Jobs Ive had, was back in the 70s when I wrote the music for one of the first reality TV shows on the ABC. It was called Breakaway and each week would feature anchorman Stuart Faichney confronting some terrifying pastime, for instance Cave diving, Mountain climbing or hang gliding. Somehow, and I think for the first time in ABC history, I managed to convince the directors that to write good music about a situation you had to be there, not just watch the footage when they got back from the shoot. One memorable episode was the Cootamundra rodeo, an exciting two days of full on competition from all the crack riders from around Australia. The animals for events were kept in a big yard with lots of holding pens and above the yard was a footbridge barely wide enough for two people to pass. There was a never-ending stream of people crossing this bridge in both directions at all times. I was crossing when I noticed coming towards me, a tall cowboy on crutches, one arm in a sling and a bandage around his head. As he came near someone in front of me said “crikey what happened to you” ‘Awww nothing” came the drawled reply. There was a brief pause and then he said “well nothing much anyway” and hobbled on his way. I later saw some footage of what did happen to him, he was riding a bucking horse trying to stay on its back for the required eight seconds but the horse was not going to stand for this and threw him off, then the horse looked around at him on the ground, kicked him twice with his back legs then sat on him, stood up, pissed on him then kicked him again. He then quietly cantered off. Yeah, nothing much !!!
