Pencil and line drawing for the batik Im finishing today. We will see how this turns out. Right now it is hidden under layers of wax and dyes. Each batik starts with a detailed line drawing. Composition is the single most important consideration when starting a project. At this stage, the elements (figures, river, grass and even clouds) are positioned moved and rearranged on the drawing so that every line contributes to the way the viewer sees and follows the painting/batik. I use vellum, which is semi transparent, to draw and redraw. In this situation, I debated whether the girl should be holding the pot balanced on or not. In the end, she is simply balancing the vessel with no support. I felt the story it told gave a sense of ease and balance. (a piano students suggested she like the vessel balanced and I couldnt argue with my brilliant piano students) However, the subject of this batik is not the girl, its the prairie grasses which fill the majority of the image area. This is the thinking process. Well see if the end result in the intended result. :)
