Preview: Large Voice Series The year was 1916 when Kirsten Flagstads parents accompanied her to Stockholm to decide on her next singing teacher. It was indeed fortunate that she went to Dr. Gillis Bratt, a throat doctor, baritone, and vocal instructor. During her first session, when she auditioned for Dr. Bratt, he asked, Have you ever sung in public? Flagstad answered, Well yes, and I have received great reviews! Dr. Bratt answered, Well I am surprised anyone could her you. You have the voice of a child and your vocal cords leak too much breath. But we can remedy this fault if you work hard and regularly! The first year of Flagstads study was difficult. But she once did say, After the first 2 months in Bratts studio my voice was 3 times larger than before! Brett worked with her on cord closure exercises that originated in the Garcia tradition. Yesterday I posted a link of Flagstads singing and you can hear the beauty of tone and color of her voice, singing quite efficiently at age 62. In this preface toward training dramatic voices I would like to say that my teacher Allan Lindquest studied with Mme. Ingebjard Isene, also a student of Dr. Bratt. Irene was Flagstads set of ears after Dr. Bratt died in 1925. It is my great hope that we can educate the listener and the teacher toward hearing and diagnosing problems that face the larger voiced singer. In a world that is more and more geared toward amplified singing, I hope we can go back to the training that allowed a voice its individual color and sound. Have a great day! David
