Recently, a new type of tea has seen a resurgence in popularity. This tea is called flowering or blooming tea. Its origins are in China, where it was enjoyed not merely for its taste but because it was considered to be a form of art for its aesthetic aspect. Unlike traditional tea, where dried leaves are sprinkled into hot water and left to steep, flowering teas are small bundles of tea leaves that have been bound together with flowers by cotton threads. When these bundles are placed in hot water, they unfurl in a manner that resembles the blooming of a flower, hence the name. Flowering teas are most commonly made using chrysanthemum, jasmine, lily, amaranth and hibiscus. Teas made with these flowers tend to be quite soothing and refreshing. Flowering teas – especially those made from jasmine – have extraordinary antioxidant properties. Jasmine leaves are picked earlier than most tea leaves, so they have been exposed to less oxidation. Antioxidants have been shown to delay aging and prevent age-related diseases. Many people enjoy flowering teas because of the relaxing activity of watching the tea bloom and the aromatic effects of the leaves. Furthermore, flowering teas – especially those made from chrysanthemum – may aid in the calming of nerves, lowering of blood pressure, and flushing the body of toxins.
