Regarding ALS Ice Bucket Challenge: If you want to help the world, - TopicsExpress

Regarding ALS Ice Bucket Challenge: If you want to help the world, please just donate money and/or volunteer your time to any charity organizations of your choice (not just ALS). Here are my thoughts and some facts: Its great to raise awareness of ALS but we need to put things into perspective, especially when so many other worthy charitable organizations really need our attention, help and fundings (not to mention the wastage of clean water that has been created as a result of the Ice Bucket Challenge but that is a separate discussion). ALS Association is on its way of getting US$100 million in donations since the Ice Bucket Challenge has started, while ALS really only affects around 12,000 Americans today with 5,600 new cases per year. The donations are primarily used for research, which in the past 30 years has not had much progress and there is unlikely a way to prevent ALS altogether. I could only hope that ALS Association will manage these new donations well and not abuse the use of fundings, as we do not really have an idea where the money is going to in terms of research on an illness that affects a very small percentage of the global population. The donations coming from the Ice Bucket Challenge are also likely a one-time thing, which means ALS Associations would need to have a concise and morally-sound strategy as to how they will manage the, say, near US$100 million for decades to come.
