SEVEN (7) DEADLY EVILS, WHICH A ‘NEW DAWN’ GOVT MUST ADDRESS (Edited) 1) Kidnapping in Southern Nigeria, with a frenzy! The Fed Govt shows double standards: Govt condoning Niger Delta militants while at the same time bombing down Boko Haram!? Yet, these two gangs are in the same business of kidnapping, murdering and causing criminal damage to property. Of course, you will say this only if you want to tell yourself the truth! 2) Armed robbery. Armed robbers and kidnappers use sophisticated weaponry enough to send policemen running for dear life as these brigands approach! 3) Random murders – Murder now seems the easiest way of settling petty disputes. Ritual murder too, so as to “harvest human body parts” goes on unabated. Who would have stopped this? Is it not the Police? But basically, what the police officers would stop you for is bribe. Pay this bribe quickly enough and you could go freely while carrying your smouldering bomb or a human head dripping with fresh blood! No questions, asked. Sometimes, even the police officers themselves commit these murders so as to cover up mistakes or further some crimes. Here comes the sad bit. The public watches helpless as such policemen go scot free! 4) (i) Unashamed banditry of public funds and (ii) Annoyingly excessive payments and allowances to legislators. Juxtapose this against the starving masses looking on as these lawmakers bask in luxury. 5)(i) Oil bunkering – Govt shows obvious non-seriousness in stamping this out. But this is economic sabotage Grade 1! 5)(ii) Illicit gift of Oil Blocs. Let all oil blocs be returned to Govt and used in revamping outdated infrastructures – to help efficient public service delivery. If oil blocs must be shared to individuals, pray; why not to every Nigerian? Indeed, what offence did most Nigerians commit so as to be deprived of own oil blocs, which others are being given freely? Oil bunkering and oil blocs’ allocation together make the Nigerian oil boom, her oil doom! This is because they make few rouge ‘elites’ filthy rich. At the same time, the masses of Nigerians are literally dying of hunger. Yes; being starved to death in the midst of the feast, as it were! Does govt fostering these evils cause endless societal unease? You bet – it does! 6) Giving presidential pardon to hardened looters of the treasury. An example of this is the pardoning of the impeached Gov Diepreye Alamieyeseigha among the other govt bandits. Giving pardon like this lands a dirty slap on the face of every law-abiding Nigerian who still hopes for a return of sanity to governance. Should one not sincerely expect govt to enforce accountability and a high sense of probity? Well, such hope is thereby, dashed; is it not? 7) Institutionalised corruption. This last evil, from the top down, has soaked right thru to the whole fabric of the Nigerian life. The Church, Mosque, education system, govt all are into corruption, knee deep.*
