SOUTH AFRICA Cuba and South Africa Consolidate Bilateral Medical Cooperation Havana (ACN) - Cuba and South Africa consolidated bilateral cooperation in the fields of medical services and training over the past months with important advancement, according to a public health official. The head of the collaboration department of the Cuban Health Ministry in South Africa, Doctor Alex Carrera told PL news agency that the two countries have maintained stable and sustained cooperation relations since the first accord was signed in 1995. At present, 119 Cuban collaborators are working in South Africa in the medical teaching or assistance fields and that number will increase by 94 with new doctors who will travel to the sister African nation over the next three months, said the doctor. The number of free-of-charge medical scholarships offered by Cuba to South African low-income youths increased to 80 up from 60, Doctor Carrera said and he went on to explain that along with that the accord also includes another modality through which, students can pay their courses on reasonable fees with the assistance of their families, or the government of Pretoria. Cuba is one of the few countries offering these services, based on a teaching tradition of over one hundred years with high results. The service is highly valued by South Africa, said the doctor.
